From Nima to London: The inspiring football journey of Mohammed Kudus

Stories and facts

Mohammed Kudus is a Ghanaian professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder or right winger for Premier League club West Ham United and the Ghana national team.

He began his professional career with Danish side Nordsjælland in 2018 after joining from the Right to Dream Academy, making his debut just days after his 18th birthday.

Kudus quickly gained attention for his talent and was signed by Dutch giants Ajax in July 2020 for €9 million. His early time at Ajax was disrupted by injuries, including a meniscus injury suffered during his UEFA Champions League debut.

Despite these setbacks, he played a key role in Ajax’s domestic double-winning 2020–21 season and went on to record 18 goals and six assists in the 2022–23 season.

In August 2023, Kudus transferred to West Ham United for a reported €44.5 million, becoming the club's third Ghanaian player and the second most expensive Ghanaian footballer of all time.

He made an immediate impact, scoring crucial goals in the UEFA Europa League and Premier League, including a scissor-kick against Brentford voted as West Ham’s Goal of the Month. He capped his debut season with 13 goals and led the league in successful dribbles with 124.

Internationally, Kudus has represented Ghana since 2019 and featured prominently in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, scoring twice against South Korea.

He also played in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where his brace against Egypt and a penalty-winning performance against Mozambique highlighted his influence, although Ghana exited in the group stage.

Kudus hails from Nima in Accra and is a devout Muslim with two brothers residing in Ghana.
