In a significant development for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama has decided to retain Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 general elections. This marks the second collaboration between the former Minister of Education and the ex-president in an election.

The information was initially reported by graphic.com.gh, although no official communication has been issued by the NDC to confirm this development. Previous reports had indicated that the announcement of the running mate for the largest opposition party in the country would be disclosed on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer of the NDC, revealed in an exclusive interview that the formal announcement is imminent and will occur later in the week. Gyamfi stated that the decision is currently undergoing finalization by the council of elders and the national executive committee of the party.

In an interview on the Election Desk on February 28, 2024, Gyamfi expressed optimism about the decision, stating, "The rank and file of the party and the general public should be expecting to hear a formal announcement tomorrow when the decision is eventually finalized, subject to the advice of the Council of Elders and the national executive committee. I am very optimistic that this is a decision that would resonate not just with our grassroots but also with the entire nation."

He emphasized that Mahama had thoroughly considered and consulted on the matter before making his choice. However, according to party protocol, the former president needed to seek formal advice from major stakeholders for approval before making the official announcement.

“The flagbearer has been thinking and consulting on this matter. He is ready with his consultation, and he has a choice. But as the constitution and systems of our party require, he needs to seek formally the advice of the Council of Elders and present the same to the National Council of the party, which is the second-highest decision-making body in the party, for advice before the same is announced,” Gyamfi explained.

He concluded by stating, “…The candidate is very clear in his mind as to who he wants to be his running mate to complement him and deliver his vision.” The formal announcement is eagerly awaited, as the NDC gears up for the 2024 general elections with John Dramani Mahama and Prof Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang as their formidable team.
