Joshua Alabi: The academic and politician who impacted Ghanaian academia

Joshua Alabi is a Ghanaian academic and politician who served as the first Vice-Chancellor of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), from 2012 to 2016, after previously holding roles as Rector and Pro-Rector.

As a politician, he represented the Krowor Constituency as an NDC Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2001 and served as Minister of State for the Greater Accra and Northern Regions during the same period.

Alabi hails from Nungua, Accra, and pursued education at St. John's Grammar School, Tamale Secondary School, and the Institute of Professional Studies.

He holds two master’s degrees: an MSc in Industrial Economics from Moscow and an MSc in International Marketing from Strathclyde University, where he won the Mushod Abiola Prize for Excellence.

In academia, Alabi rose through the ranks at UPSA, contributing significantly as a lecturer, department head, and committee chair.

Politically, he led the reorganization of the NDC in the Greater Accra Region after the 2000 elections and served as the party's Regional Chairman from 2001 to 2005.

During his student years, he held leadership roles in the National Union of Ghana Students and initiated impactful projects like delivering medicines to Ghana during economic hardship in the 1980s.
