Monica Amekoafia, born in Alavanyo, Trans-Volta Togoland, won the first Miss Ghana contest in 1957 as contestant Number 9, a term later associated with the Volta Region. After marrying diplomat Henry Kofi Marrah, they lived abroad due to his postings, returning to Ghana in 1966.

In Ghana, Monica balanced domestic life with entrepreneurship. Following her husband's passing in 1985, she passed away from an asthma attack in 1990. Her legacy is honored with a statue in Hohoe, Volta Region.
