Later, in 2018, it underwent a name change to become the Abuakwa South Municipality under the Local Government Act li 2304. Today, it stands as a vibrant and thriving region, encompassing an area of 210 square kilometers, with Kyebi serving as its municipal capital.

Bordered by six districts—Abuakwa North, West Akim, New Juabeng North, Suhum, and Atiwa West—the Abuakwa South Municipality boasts a diverse and culturally rich population. As of the latest available data, the municipality is home to approximately 88,828 residents, with 44,795 being female and 44,033 being male. The majority of the population are farmers and mining workers, reflecting the area's reliance on agriculture as a primary economic activity.

The municipality's geography and climate are conducive to agricultural pursuits. Situated within the moist semi-deciduous forest zone, the area is blessed with fertile soils that support a wide variety of crops. The forest reserves, covering approximately 108.8 square kilometers, include the famous Atewa Forest Reserve, known for its abundant biodiversity and ecological significance. The lush forest contains valuable commercial tree species such as odum, wawa, ofram, mahogany, and kyenkyen.

The Abuakwa South Municipality enjoys a favorable climate for agricultural activities. It falls within the west semi-equatorial zone, characterized by double rainfall maxima occurring in June and October, with the main rainy seasons from May to June and September to October. The mean annual rainfall ranges between 125mm and 175mm, providing crucial water resources for crop cultivation. However, the distinct dry seasons from November to late February can pose challenges to construction projects due to cost and time overruns.

The Abuakwa South Municipal Assembly has several departments working together to ensure effective governance and development.

This decentralized department focuses on providing extension delivery services and promoting improved agricultural technologies to enhance crop production, value chains, and income generation.

 Responsible for the management and use of financial resources to achieve value for money, adherence to financial regulations, and the maintenance of proper accounts.Primarily involved in preparing planning and revision schemes, controlling physical development, processing development permit applications, and advising on spatial and economic-related planning issues.

Tasked with formulating and implementing social welfare and community development policies in line with national guidelines.Implementing programs such as the Rural Enterprises Programme (REP) to promote business development services and technical training for entrepreneurs.

Dedicated to establishing an efficient, cost-effective, and sustainable integrated urban transport system that meets the needs of the society.The region operates an ambulance station at Kibi, fully operational since May 2012, to provide emergency medical services.

Responsible for coordinating all human resources programs, staff training, and ensuring effective HR administration. Focused on the orderly and aesthetic development of the built environment within the municipality, including maintaining schools, markets, and managing the Assembly's properties and building projects.
