Okere District - Adukrom

Stories and facts

The Okere District Assembly's genesis can be traced back to the year 2018 when Ghana witnessed the creation and elevation of 38 new MMDAs, following the enactment of Local Government Act LI 2342. Among these emerging entities was the Okere District Assembly, which emerged as an independent administrative unit, distinct from its precursor, the Akuapem North Municipal Assembly. This transformative move was a testament to Ghana's commitment to local governance and decentralization.

Spanning an impressive land area of 311 square kilometres, the Okere District Assembly claims its territory in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Its geographical boundaries encompass diverse landscapes, presenting both opportunities and challenges for development. In terms of population, the 2021 census revealed that the district is home to 51,675 residents, comprising 24,582 males and 27,093 females. This population snapshot underscores the importance of the Assembly's efforts to cater to the needs of its constituents.

At the heart of the Okere District Assembly's operations lies a dynamic political structure. The Assembly boasts a total membership of Thirty-Three (33) individuals, with Twenty-One (21) members elected by the people and Ten (10) appointed by the government, constituting 30% of the total Assembly membership. In addition, the District Chief Executive plays a pivotal role in the Assembly's affairs, alongside the esteemed Member of Parliament for the Okere Constituency. Notably, while the Member of Parliament is an integral part of the Assembly, they hold a non-voting status, distinguishing their role from that of other members.

The Okere District Assembly stands as a testament to Ghana's commitment to grassroots governance and effective decentralization. Emerging as one of the newly created and upgraded MMDAs in 2018, the Assembly has swiftly evolved into a vital institution in the Eastern Region. With its unique blend of political leadership, strategic geographical location, and a burgeoning population, the Okere District Assembly is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the socio-economic landscape of its region and contributing to Ghana's broader developmental trajectory.
