Positioned in the northeastern expanse of Ghana, the Sissala West District occupies a geographical space between Longitude 213w to 2:36w and Latitude 10:00N 11:00N. Its administrative nucleus is Gwollu. Encompassing a land expanse of 1,814 square kilometres, it constitutes approximately a quarter of the total landmass of the Upper West Region.

The district shares its northern border with Burkina Faso, fostering cross-border socio-economic interactions. To its east, it converges with the Sissala East Municipal area; to the south, it adjoins the Wa East District. On its western periphery, it interfaces with the Jirapa Municipal and Lambussie Karni Districts, while its southwestern boundaries connect with the Daffiama Bussie Issa District.

As of the 2021 population and housing census, the district's populace tallies up to 63,828 individuals, distributed with 31,556 males and 32,727 females.
