To the north lie the Central and North Tongu Districts, to the east is the Akatsi South District, and to the west is the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region. The southern border is defined by the Keta Municipality. Covering an area of 643.57 square kilometers, the district represents 3.1 percent of the total land size of the Volta Region. Its administrative capital is Sogakope, and the district is divided into four Area Councils, each comprising forty electoral areas.

As of the 2010 Population and Housing Census (PHC), the total population of South Tongu District stands at 87,950, constituting 4.1 percent of the entire population of the Volta region. Females make up 54.5 percent of the population, while males account for 45.5 percent. The district is primarily rural, with the majority (87.1%) of the population residing in rural areas. Notably, the rural areas tend to have a higher concentration of individuals aged 60 years and older, regardless of gender.

The population density in South Tongu District is 136.7 persons per square kilometer, surpassing the overall population density of the Volta Region, which is 103 persons per square kilometer. The district comprises 20,509 households, with an average household size of 4.2 individuals. When examining the age-sex structure of the population, it becomes evident that the district's population pyramid has a broad base, indicating a larger proportion of young children, and a narrow apex, reflecting a smaller number of elderly individuals.

Additionally, it is noteworthy that as the age increases, the population pyramid appears slightly narrower for males compared to females, suggesting that at older ages, there is a relatively higher proportion of females than males.
