At the heart of UMKD lies Asesewa, a historically rich trading post that has beckoned travelers and traders from diverse corners of the country, resulting in a vibrant fusion of cultures. Located approximately 45 kilometres away from Koforidua, the regional capital of the Eastern Region, Asesewa serves as the district's capital and a gateway to its unique cultural tapestry.

Geographically, UMKD occupies the northeastern fringes of the Eastern Region, spanning latitudes -6.2 to -6.50 N and longitudes -0.3 to 0.00 W of the Greenwich Meridian. Its elevation reaches an impressive 457.5 meters, affording breathtaking vistas of the surrounding terrain.

As of the latest 2021 population and housing census, the district's population stands at 70,676 individuals, with a fairly balanced distribution of 35,620 males and 35,056 females. This demographic snapshot captures the dynamic human presence that shapes and enriches UMKD's cultural fabric.

UMKD shares its borders with several neighboring districts, each contributing to the district's multifaceted identity. To the north lies Afram Plains, while the southeastern boundary is marked by Lower Manya Krobo. On the southwestern frontier, the district is bordered by Yilo Krobo District, while the eastward expanse meets Asuogyaman District. To the west, UMKD brushes against Fanteakwa District, collectively weaving a network of connections that extend beyond administrative lines.

Covering an area of 885 square kilometers, UMKD encompasses 4.6 percent of the total landmass of the Eastern Region of Ghana, which spans approximately 19,323 square kilometres. This geographical scope provides a canvas upon which the district's diverse cultural, economic, and social narratives unfold.
