Stories and facts
Accra High School, a prominent senior high school in Accra, Ghana, has a rich history dating back to its founding on August 17, 1923, by the late Rev. James Thomas Roberts.
Originally established as a boys' school, Accra High School was situated on Beach Avenue in Aayalolo, a suburb of Accra.
The school celebrated its first anniversary in August 1924 with a church service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Accra, where the Anglican Bishop of Accra, the late Dr. John Aglionby, delivered the sermon, establishing a strong connection between the school and the Church of England.
In 1924, the school presented its first candidates for the College of Preceptors as well as for the Cambridge University, the Royal Society of Arts, and Pitman's Shorthand Examinations in the United Kingdom.
By 1926, most pupils had sat for and passed the Junior Cambridge Examination. That same year, Mr. Frank Roberts, the eldest son of Rev. Roberts, joined the staff after earning a Bachelor of Arts degree from the United Kingdom. His efforts significantly enhanced the academic and disciplinary standards of the school.
In 1927, J.O. Ansah Johnson became the first student to pass the Cambridge School Certificate Examination, marking a milestone in the school's history.
Over the years, Accra High School has continued to grow and evolve, maintaining its commitment to academic excellence and discipline.
