The inception of the Ada West District can be traced back to the year 2012 when it was carved out of the former Dangme East. This administrative reorganization was formalized through the enactment of the Legislative Instrument 2129 of 2012. The district's administrative capital is Sege, located approximately 80 kilometers from the bustling city of Accra, along the Accra-Aflao road.
As of the latest available data from the 2021 population and housing census, the Ada West District is home to an estimated population of 76,087 people. This population consists of 37,132 males and 38,955 females, reflecting a relatively balanced gender distribution.
Geographically, the Ada West District stretches between Latitudes 5°45'S and 6°00'N and Longitudes 0°20'W and 0°35'E. Covering a total land area of approximately 323.72 square kilometers, the district encompasses about 10% of the total land size of the Greater Accra Region.
The Ada West District shares its borders with neighboring administrative units. To the north, it adjoins the North Tongu District of the Volta Region, while to the east lies the Ada East District. On its western side, the district is bordered by the Ningo Prampram District. To the south, the district is bounded by the Gulf of Guinea, and its coastline stretches over an impressive 45 kilometers (27.9 miles) from Wokumagbe through Goi to Kablevu.
Within the district's administrative framework, two key departments play essential roles in supporting its governance and operations: the Central Administration Department and the Human Resource Department.
The Central Administration Department serves as the secretariat of the District Assembly and assumes responsibility for providing support services, ensuring effective and efficient general administration, and organizing various aspects of the District Assembly. It manages critical sections of the assembly, including records, estate, transport, logistics, procurement, accounts, stores, security, and human resources management. Additionally, the department coordinates general administrative functions, development planning and management functions, budgeting functions, rating functions, statistics and information services, as well as human resource planning and development for the District Assembly.
The Human Resource Department is tasked with coordinating all human resource development programs within the district and effectively managing these resources to enhance service delivery and accomplish the assembly's short and long-term goals. Some of its core functions include advising management on human resource management policies of the Local Government Service, ensuring efficient administration of human resources, translating institutional policies related to employment, personnel, wages, and salaries into good management practices, facilitating human resource planning and recruitment of competent personnel, maintaining staff records, promoting inter and intra-departmental collaboration for staff performance and development, addressing staff welfare concerns, reporting on human resource-related activities, and fostering the capabilities, skills, and knowledge of staff through appropriate development initiatives. Additionally, the department conducts performance appraisals of its direct reports to ensure accountability and growth.
