Established through the enactment of Legislative Instrument (LI) 2014 in 2012, the Bia West District emerged as a distinct entity from the former Bia District. It encompasses a total land area of 1,344 square kilometres. Positioned 420km northwest of Sekondi-Takoradi and 250km from Kumasi, the district's administrative hub is Essam.
Bordered by the Bia East District to the north and east, the western edge is shared with the Republic of La Cote d'Ivoire, while the southern boundary adjoins the Juaboso District.
As of the 2021 population and housing census, the district's population stands at 115,881 individuals, comprising 59,955 males and 55,926 females.
