In recognition of its growth and development, it was later elevated to the status of a Municipality in 2018 by Legislative Instrument 2041. The Assembly carries out executive, deliberative, and legislative functions, all aimed at promoting the development of the Municipality.

Geographical Location

Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal is situated in the Western part of the Ashanti Region, lying approximately between latitude 6o 32’N and 6o 75’N, and between longitude 1o 36’ and 2o 00’ West. It shares its boundaries with Ahafo Ano South and Atwima Mponua Municipalities to the West, Atwima Nwabiagya North District to the North, Amansie-West and Atwima Kwanwoma Districts to the South, and Kumasi Metropolis to the East. The Municipality covers an estimated area of 294.84 sq km, and its administrative capital is Nkawie.

Population

According to the 2010 Population and Housing Census, the total population of Atwima Nwabiagya District was 149,025, with an annual growth rate of 2.7%. Following the creation of the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipality, it now has a population of 92,867. The Census data indicates a sex ratio of 93, suggesting a higher number of females than males in the Municipality. The projected population for the Municipality in 2021 is 124,925, while the inter-censal projected population was 106,268.
