The Ayawaso West Municipal was established in 2018 under LI 2312, emerging as one of the 38 newly created and upgraded district assemblies in Ghana. Covering a total land area of 385 square kilometers, it accounts for approximately 3.0% of the Greater Accra Regional landmass. Its geographical coordinates are Longitude 05°35'N and Latitude 00°06'W.
The municipality shares its borders with several neighboring areas, which include the La Nkwantanang Madina Municipal, Adentan Municipal, Ledzokuku Municipal, La Dade Kotopon Municipal, Ayawaso North Municipal, Accra Metropolitan, Okaikwei North Municipal, and Ga East Municipal.
As of the 2021 population and housing census, the Ayawaso West Municipal is home to a population of 75,303 people, with 38,164 males and 36,689 females. The district is a melting pot of diverse cultural backgrounds, including the Ga people who celebrate the Homowo Festival, Akan People of Northern Descent, Ewes, Nigerians, and a mix of other tribes. Additionally, the municipality hosts expatriates from various parts of the world who contribute to its cosmopolitan character. The most widely spoken languages in the area are Twi, Ga, Ewe, and other local dialects.
Ayawaso West Municipal embodies a modern and cosmopolitan culture that reflects the diversity of its inhabitants. The Ayawaso West Municipal operates under the Local Government (Departments of District Assemblies) (Commencement) Instrument, 2009 (L. I. 1961). The Central Administration Department serves as the Secretariat of the District Assembly and oversees several key functions, including estate management, transportation, logistics and procurement, accounts, stores, and security.
The Development Planning Department takes charge of strategic planning and implementing public policies and programs to achieve sustainable economic growth and development. It also prepares district development plans and settlement structure plans, integrating sector and spatial policies to align with national development objectives.
The Procurement & Logistics Unit ensures that procurement activities adhere to the Public Procurement Act, 2003 (Act 663). It supervises stores management, asset disposal, and prepares reports for the Public Procurement Authority.
The Internal Audit Unit operates as an independent and objective assurance and consulting activity, evaluating and improving the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes within the municipality.
The Information Service/ Public Relations Department disseminates government policies, programs, and activities, promoting a two-way communication channel between the government, residents, and other stakeholders. It also collaborates with the National Commission for Civic Education to promote peace in the municipality.
The Management Information Systems Unit leads in the development and application of IT/IM standards, ensuring the deployment and security of IT/IM systems and resources.
Budget and Rating Department provides technical leadership in budget preparation and management, advising the assembly on financial decisions, and participating in the preparation of procurement plans and fee-fixing resolutions.
Transport Unit formulates and implements transport policies, oversees the efficient utilization of official vehicles, and ensures their maintenance and proper functioning.
