In 2008, Adentan achieved full municipal status after being part of the Tema municipality through the passage of LI 1888, marking a significant milestone in its development.

Geographically, the Adentan Municipality is situated approximately 10 kilometres northeast of Accra, at latitude 5' 43' North and longitude 0' 09' West. Encompassing an area of about 85 sq. km (33 sq miles), it shares its boundaries with Kpone-Katamanso and Ashaiman Municipalities to the East, Madina/La Nkwatanang Municipality to the West, Kpone-Katamanso in the North, and Madina/La Nkwatanang and Ledzokuku Krowor Municipalities in the South. Adentan serves as a vital nodal point where the main Accra/Aburi/Koforidua and Accra/Dodowa trunk roads intersect, enhancing its significance as a strategic location in the region.

Political administration in Adentan is structured through the Adentan Municipal Assembly, comprising 18 members. Among them are 12 elected representatives, 6 government appointees, 1 Member of Parliament, and the Municipal Chief Executive as the representative of the Head of State at the municipal level. The General Assembly operates with two main committees: the Executive Committee and the Public Relations Complaints Committee (PRCC). Additionally, there are five statutory sub-committees and six other non-statutory sub-committees, each with specific responsibilities related to finance and administration, works, development planning, social services, justice and security, education, agriculture, environmental and sanitation, women and children, micro and small enterprises promotion, and revenue mobilization.

For efficient local governance, the municipality is further divided into four Zonal Councils, namely Gbentanaa, Nii Ashale, Koose, and Sutsurunaa. Although Adentan is predominantly an urban area with a substantial labor force in the public sector, it still supports agricultural activities. Approximately 1.99% of the labor force, constituting an estimated farmer population of 1,855 out of a total population of 92,831, is engaged in agriculture. The agricultural activities are concentrated in electoral areas such as Man Momo, New Adenta, Amrahia-Marledzor, Nmai Dzor, Otano, Man Hee, Ogbojo, and Adjiriganor, contributing to the local economy and food production.
