Established as a distinct administrative entity in 2018, the Ahafo Ano South East District Assembly emerged from the original Ahafo Ano South District Assembly (now known as Ahafo Ano South District West). This restructuring was part of a larger initiative that saw the creation and elevation of 38 new District Assemblies. The legal foundation for its establishment is found in LI 2324. The district's administrative center is located in Adugyama. An auspicious milestone was reached on March 15, 2018, when the Ahafo Ano South East District Assembly, along with 37 other newly established districts, was officially inaugurated.

Geographically, the district encompasses a land area of approximately 545.16 km², which accounts for approximately 2.2 percent of the total land area of the Ashanti Region (24,370.5 km²). The district is situated in the northwestern quadrant of the Ashanti Region, its coordinates marked by a longitude of -1.87 and a latitude of 6.88, with an elevation of 267.5 metres.

The Ahafo Ano South East District shares its borders with several neighboring districts and municipalities. To its north lies the Offinso North District, while the Ahafo Ano South West District bounds it to the south. The eastern border is defined by the Atwima Nwabiagya North District, and to the west, it extends to the Tano South Municipal within the Ahafo Region. Adjacent areas include Offinso Municipal to the northeast, Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal to the southeast, and Ahafo Ano North Municipal to the southwest.

Based on the data collected during the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the district is home to a population of 63,468 individuals, comprising 32,071 males and 31,397 females.
