The Ahafo Region, a beacon of development in Ghana, emerged as a testament to the commitment to regional growth. Established in 2019, with Goaso as its capital, the region was carved out of the south-eastern part of the Brong Ahafo Region. This strategic move was in alignment with the New Patriotic Party's promise to enhance governance proximity to citizens, as declared by then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo before the 2016 Ghanaian general election.
The meticulous planning for the creation of the Ahafo Region fell under the purview of the Ministry of Regional Reorganization and Development, led by Hon. Dan Botwe. This government ministry, tasked with supervising the establishment of new regions in Ghana, embarked on a comprehensive process. The blueprint for the region's creation, along with others, was submitted to the Council of State in March 2017. After more than 36 deliberations, the fate of the Ahafo Region was sealed through a referendum on December 27, 2018.
The Ahafo Region is a tapestry of vibrant communities, with major towns like Mim, Ahafo, Goaso, Bechem, Duayaw Nkwanta, and Kenyasi. Administratively, the region is divided into six MMDAs, comprising three Municipal and three Ordinary Assemblies. Each assembly is governed by a Chief Executive, representing the central government, with authority derived from an Assembly led by a presiding member elected from among its members.
The historic referendum on December 27, 2018, witnessed an overwhelming endorsement of the creation of the Ahafo Region. Out of 307,108 registered voters, 276,763 (99.68%) voted in favor, marking a decisive moment in Ghana's regional evolution. Constitutional Instrument 114, enacted on February 13, 2019, officially brought the Ahafo Region into existence, with Goaso designated as its capital.
Ahafo's economic prowess lies in its rich natural resources, with gold, diamonds, and timber standing out. Notably, the Mim, Ahafo, Kenyasi, and Yamfo areas are home to extensive gold deposits, attracting major mining companies like Newmont Gold Ghana Limited. The timber industry, supported by the region's abundant forest reserves, stands as a significant employer, with notable companies like Ayum Forest Products Co. Ltd and Exbo Wood Co. Ltd.
Agriculture thrives in Ahafo's fertile soil, making it the breadbasket of Ghana. Cocoa and cashew production flourishes, supported by the Mim Cashew & Agric Products company LTD. The region's diverse agricultural landscape contributes to its standing as a key agro-processing hub.
The Ahafo Region beckons tourists with its captivating attractions. The Mim Bour (Mim Rock), Mim Lake, White-necked Rockfowl conservation at Asumura, and the iconic Okomfo Anokye tree at Sankore showcase the region's natural wonders. These attractions contribute to the region's allure as a destination for cultural and ecological exploration.
Situated in the forest belt of Ghana, the Ahafo Region boasts fertile soil and a diverse vegetation cover. Savannas adorned with drought-resistant baobabs and acacias define the landscape. The region experiences a distinct dry season from December to April and a wet season from July to November, with temperatures ranging from 14 °C (59 °F) to 40 °C (104 °F).
