It emerged as an independent entity following its separation from the Adansi South District Assembly, as part of the initiative to establish 38 new and upgraded District Assemblies in 2018.

Positioned in the southern expanse of the region, the district's administrative hub is Akrofuom. Geographically, it spans between Latitude 40” North and 6 degrees 22” North, and Longitude 1 degree West and 1 degree 38” West. Encompassing a total land area of 899 square kilometres, the district shares boundaries with several neighboring districts. To the north and north-east, it shares borders with the Obuasi East District, Adansi Asokwa, and Adansi South Districts. On its southern border lies the Upper Denkyira East Municipal in the Central Region.

According to the data retrieved from the 2021 population and housing census, the district's population stands at 49,291 individuals. Among this population, 26,315 are identified as males, while 22,976 are females.
