Stories and facts

The Atebubu Amantin Municipal is part of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana. It is among the 11 municipalities and districts within the Bono East Region, and its administrative center is Atebubu.

The Atebubu Amanten District emerged from the former Atebubu District in 2004. In 2017, it gained municipal status through the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2266. Positioned between latitudes 7o 23”N and 8o 22”N, and longitudes 0o 30’W and 1o 26’W, it spans an area of approximately 257 square kilometers.

To its north lies the Pru East District, while the Sene West District is to the east. To the west are the Kintampo South District and Nkoranza North District, all within the Bono East Region. To the south, it shares boundaries with three districts in the Ashanti Region: Ejura Sekyedumase Municipal, Sekyere East District, and Sekyere South District.

As of the 2021 population and housing census, the district's population stands at 144,947, with 72,993 males and 71,954 females.

Originally, the Atebubu-Amantin District was a part of the larger Atebubu District until it was divided to form the Pru District in 2003. Subsequently, the remaining portion became the Atebubu-Amantin District, which was later elevated to a municipal district assembly in 2018. The municipality is located in the east central area of the Bono East Region, with Atebubu as its capital town.

The district consists of eight zonal councils, namely Atebubu, Amantin, New Konkrompe, Jato Zongo, Akokoa, Nyomoase, Kumfia/Fakwasi, and Garadima.

The local economy is primarily reliant on agriculture, with around 75% of the labor force engaged in farming. Notably, the weekly market in Atebubu serves as a significant trading hub for agricultural products, contributing to revenue generation for the municipality.

However, challenges such as inadequate road infrastructure, limited access to education and healthcare, and water and sanitation issues persist. Efforts have been made to address these concerns, including the completion of various projects such as healthcare facilities, street lighting, and boreholes.

In line with its mission, the Atebubu-Amantin Municipal Assembly aims to promote sustainable empowerment, provide quality education and healthcare services, enhance environmental sanitation, and reduce poverty by optimizing available resources.

Overall, the Atebubu Amantin Municipal District is part of the Bono East Region's local governance framework, striving to uplift the living standards of its residents through strategic development initiatives.
