Atiwa West District - Kwabeng

Stories and facts

Its current designation was granted through Legislative Instrument (LI) 1784 of 2004.

Origins trace back to its separation from the former East Akim District Assembly, now known as the East Akim Municipal Assembly, during the year 2004. Positioned at the base of the Atiwa Range, its administrative center is the town of Kwabeng.

Covering an overall expanse of 656 square kilometers, the Atiwa West District spans between longitudes O° 3? West and O° 50 East, as well as latitudes 6° 10? North and 6° 30? North. The district's boundaries are defined by the Kwahu West Municipal and Kwahu South District to the north, Fanteakwa South District to the northeast, East Akim Municipal to the southeast, Kwaebibirem Municipal to the south, and Birim North District to the west.

The strategic geographical placement of the Atiwa West District, sharing borders with regions renowned for agricultural production, presents a prospect for establishing agro-processing facilities that can utilize raw materials sourced from these neighboring areas.

The extensive area under the jurisdiction of the district has implications for several smaller settlements, whose population may not meet the threshold necessary for the provision of specific socio-economic infrastructure. Furthermore, given its status as a relatively new district, there may be a need for substantial financial resources to address existing gaps in infrastructure.

As of the 2021 population and housing census, the district's population stands at 61,219 individuals, comprising 31,288 males and 29,931 females.
