The Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly came into existence in 2018, marking a significant milestone in the region's administrative history. It was carved out of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly as part of a larger initiative that led to the creation and upgrade of 38 new district assemblies. The capital of this newly formed municipality is Accra New Town, a bustling urban center at the heart of the region's activities. The establishment of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly was made possible by the enactment of LI 2311, a legislative instrument that defined its boundaries and responsibilities.
The inauguration of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly took place on March 15, 2018, alongside 37 other newly created districts, symbolizing a new chapter in the region's local governance. As part of Greater Accra, the municipal assembly shares its borders with Ayawaso West Municipal to the north, Ayawaso East Municipal to the east and south, and Ayawaso Central Municipal to the west, fostering cooperation and coordination among neighboring administrative units.
Covering a total area of 2.2 square kilometers, the Ayawaso North Municipal is home to a diverse population. As of the end of 2018, it was estimated that approximately 118,688 people resided within its boundaries. This population was projected to grow steadily, reaching around 130,256 by 2021, assuming an annual growth rate of 3.1%. These figures, based on data from the 2010 National Population and Housing Census by the Ghana Statistical Service, highlighted the area's potential for growth and development.
As data collection methods improved and the 2021 Population and Housing Census was conducted, more accurate figures came to light. According to this census, the population size of the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly was recorded as 63,386. Among this population, there were approximately 30,043 males and 33,343 females, showcasing a relatively balanced gender distribution.
With its rich history and diverse population, the Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly continues to play a vital role in the development and progress of Ghana's Greater Accra Region. As one of the 261 MMDAs in the country, it actively participates in local governance, addressing the needs and aspirations of its residents, and contributing to the overall growth of the nation. With a focus on sustainable development, social welfare, and economic progress, the future looks promising for the Ayawaso North Municipal as it strives to build a prosperous and inclusive community for all its citizens.
In the event of flooding emergencies within 2424 hoursplanned response mechanism of the Municipal Assembly led by the NADMO office includes;
· The Operational team of the Assembly will also be activated
· Aside from the operational team, the Disaster Management Committee will also be activated
· Declare the emergency, convene a meeting with partners for information and mobilization by MCE & NADMO
· Convene a meeting with Municipal Disaster Management Committee by NADMO
· Appeal for external Aid where necessary by RCC
· Activate flood Risk contingency plan by ANMA/NADO
· Deploy a joint rapid needs assessment mission to affected areas by NADMO/stakeholders
· Start emergency relief based on rapid assessment by NADMO/stakeholders
· Share information/situation report with members of the Disaster Management Committee by NADMO
· Implement a communication plan targeting affected populations and media by DMC
The department, Provides Secretarial Services to other Departments and Co-ordinate their programs. Organize and produce reports of various Committees of the Assembly.
Human Resource Department, Co-ordinates all Human Resource Programs within the Assembly; such as Staffing, Training/Development, and Salary Administration.
The Department is responsible for Policy Translation, Implementation, Coordination, Monitoring and Evaluation. The Health Department also provides direction in the Management of Health Service Delivery at all levels within the municipality. The Department works with people in the community to improve their well-being through Promoting Development with Equity for the Disadvantaged, Vulnerable, and the Excluded.
The Department provides extension services to farmers in the areas of Crop management, and natural resources management and encourages crop development through nursery propagation. Assist in the formulation and implementation of agricultural policy for the municipal assembly within the framework of national policies.
Finance Dept. Manages the Cash flow of the Assembly, Prepares the Assembly's Financial Report, and Advice Management on Financial Matters. The Department is to enhance Inclusive and Equitable Access to and Participation in Quality Education at all levels
The Department is mandated to collect, compile/produce, and disseminate official statistics in the Municipality. The Works Department, Improves the Living Standards in the Community through Infrastructure Development and also provides technical and Engineering Assistance on Works undertaken in the Municipality by the Government and Private Individuals.
Improve Efficiency and Effectiveness of Road Transport Infrastructure and Services. Manage the Periodic Maintenance of All Roads in the Municipality. Promote Resilient Urban Development. Prepare, Amend, and Manage Requisite Human Settlement Plans. The dept. deals with all Land Use matters.
The Department helps in addressing recurrent devastating floods. Intensify public education on indiscriminate disposal of waste
