Geographical Location and Dimensions

The Central Tongu District spans latitudes 60N to 6020’N and longitudes 0025’ E to 0045’E. It shares its borders with the Adaklu District to the North, South Tongu to the South, North Tongu to the West, and Akatsi South to the East, all situated within the Volta Region. Adjacent to this district, the Ada West and Ada East Districts of the Greater Accra Region share the South-Western boundaries. The land area of the Central Tongu District measures approximately 682.22 square kilometres, which accounts for about 3.1% of the entire land area of the Volta Region. This location classifies the district as peri-urban due to its close proximity to both the Volta Regional capital, Ho, and the national capital, Accra.

Demographic Overview

According to the provisional results of the 2021 Population and Housing Census (PHC), the population of the Central Tongu District was recorded as 83,803. This demographic composition consists of 39,436 (47.00%) males and 44,367 (53.00%) females. Notably, the population growth rate of the district surpasses both national and regional averages, standing at 2.5% each. This heightened growth rate can be attributed to the district's strategic location, suggesting potential pressures on existing socio-economic services, facilities, and resources within the area.

Demographic Urbanization

The urban classification of communities within the district, based on the 2021 PHC, relies on population size as the determining factor. Localities with populations exceeding 5,000 are categorized as urban, while those with fewer than 5,000 residents are designated as rural. The 2021 PHC data reveals that within the district, 11,286 individuals reside in urban areas, while 72,517 individuals reside in rural communities. Consequently, the population distribution within the Central Tongu District is predominantly rural, constituting 86.5%, with the remaining 13.5% residing in urban centers.

Communities and Settlements

The district comprises a network of communities, with notable exceptions being Adidome and Mafi Kumase, where populations exceed the 5,000 threshold according to the 2010 PHC data. Consequently, these two locations are classified as urban settlements within the Central Tongu District. In total, the district encompasses 27 Electoral Areas that encompass over 216 communities. Some of these communities include Central Adidome, North Adidome, Old Bakpa, Awadiwoe-kome, New Bakpa, Bakpa Avedo, Bakpa Gafatsikope, Devime, Mafi-Divime, Avakpedome, Mafi Avedo, Mafi-Anfoe, Mafi-Mawoekpor, Kpedzeglo, Mafi-Agoe, Agorve, Noegbedzikope, Dzogadze, Tsakpo, Gidikpoe, Kpoviadzi, Mafi Tsati, Mafi Wudukpo, Mafi-Kumase, Sasekpe, and Mafi Yingor (Zongo) Mafi-Fiekpe.
