Stories and facts
Nestled within Ghana's Central Region, the Gomoa Central District stands as one of the 261 distinctive Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies in the nation. It forms a subset of the 22 MMDAs specifically found within the Central Region. Once a constituent of the broader Gomoa District, the Gomoa Central District officially took shape in 2008, stemming from the eastern segment of the original district, which later evolved into the Gomoa East District. This division subsequently paved the way for the formation of two additional districts in 2018: the Gomoa Central District, with its administrative hub in Gomoa Afransi, and the concurrent Gomoa East District, centered around Potsin. The remaining sector retained its identity as the Gomoa West District. Commanding its district affairs from the southeastern sector of the Central Region, the district assembly finds its headquarters in Gomoa Afransi, the central town of significance.
Operating under the title of the Gomoa Central District Assembly, this governing body is counted among the twenty-two districts that collectively comprise the Central Region of Ghana. This distinct district entity emerged independently in April 2018, formally established by Legislative Instrument 2339, marking its separation from the preceding Gomoa East District. The district encompasses a land expanse of 206.69 square kilometers and accommodated an estimated populace of 90,465 individuals in 2019, exhibiting a growth rate of 3.2 percent. Projected figures anticipate a population of 93,406 for the year 2020 and an additional 96,444 for 2021. Spearheading the assembly's activities is the District Chief Executive, aided in administrative functions by the District Coordinating Director and a dedicated team of fifteen other personnel.
The results of the 2021 population and housing census reveal a total population of 83,610 residents within the district, comprising 39,101 males and 44,509 females.
Designated with Afransi as its capital, the Gomoa Central District emerged from the then-existing Gomoa District in 2008, as mandated by Legislative Instrument 1883. Spanning an area of 539.69 square kilometers, it occupies the southeastern sector of the Central Region, bordered by the Agona East District to the northeast, Gomoa West District to the southwest, Awutu Senya East Municipal and Ga South Municipal in the Greater Accra Region to the east, and Effutu Municipal to the south. The district's southern edge meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Geographically, the Gomoa Central District spans about 260.69 square kilometers and was established in 2018 as a distinct entity from the former Gomoa East District. It envisions transforming into a premier, citizen-centric Local Government Authority. The district's mission is to enhance citizens' quality of life by providing equitable services, efficient resource mobilization, professionalism, and sound governance.
Key goals include fostering sustainable socio-economic growth through resource development, private sector engagement, and good governance to improve the well-being of all residents, particularly the vulnerable. Core functions encompass public health promotion, road construction and maintenance (excluding trunk roads), disease prevention, housing planning, and community development.
The district's economy primarily relies on agriculture, with crops such as cassava, maize, pineapple, and various non-traditional crops contributing to livelihoods. The district features market centers at Gomoa Aboso and Afransi, with infrastructure development ongoing to enhance revenue generation. Road networks consist of feeder roads and urban highways, with maintenance activities focused on the former. Education encompasses numerous basic schools, private and public, along with a private university, Perez University. Health care is delivered through community and sub-district facilities, with a Polyclinic under construction in Abonyi. Access to water sources for drinking and domestic use is widespread, and sanitation efforts have improved.
The district's energy coverage extends to approximately 90% of communities, and it boasts several potential tourism sites, including the Crown Forest Safari Park, a unique Palm Tree with Three branches, the Gomoa Two-Weeks Festival, and the Suaye Technology Centre, which houses the country's sole Auto Mobile Company.
The Gomoa Central District stands as a testament to progress, envisioning a future characterized by comprehensive growth, socio-economic development, and an improved quality of life for its residents. With a strategic roadmap in place and a commitment to equitable governance, the district is poised to navigate towards a promising horizon of prosperity.
