Established in 1988, the Kwabre East Municipal emerged from the prior Kwabre Sekyere District, occupying a strategic location in the heart of the Ashanti region. Its geographic coordinates span from approximately 60° 44' North latitude to 10° 33' to 10° 44' West longitude. Encompassing an area of 246.8 square kilometres, it contributes around 1.01% to the overall land area of the Ashanti Region. The municipality's administrative center, Mamponteng, lies at a distance of approximately 14.5 kilometres to the northeast of Kumasi. Situated within the greater Kumasi City Region, this municipal entity is an integral part of the composite unit comprising the Kumasi Metropolitan Area along with its adjacent districts.

Kwabre East Municipality shares its borders with several neighboring districts. It is contiguous with the Sekyere South District to the north, the Kumasi Metropolitan Area to the south, the Ejisu Municipal to the southeast, the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal to the west, and the Offinso Municipal to the northwest.

As of the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the municipality population stands at 296,814 individuals. This demographic composition consists of 143,684 males and 153,130 females.
