As part of the larger network of Two Hundred and Sixty (260) local governing bodies in the country, the district plays a crucial role in the region's socio-economic development. It is situated between latitudes 6º 75N and 6º 90N, and longitudes 1º 20’W and 1º 60’W.
Location and size
Covering a total land area of 119.1 square kilometres, the Obuasi East District constitutes approximately 0.49% of the entire land area of the Ashanti region, which spans 24,389 square kilometres. Its strategic location in the southern part of the Ashanti Region places it about 66 kilometres away from Kumasi, the regional capital. The district enjoys connectivity with Kumasi through two major roads, namely the Kumasi-Bekwai-Adansi Asokwa road and the main Kumasi Obuasi High street road.
The Obuasi East District boasts diverse landscapes and an array of communities and settlements, with significant towns like Tutuka, Bossman, Wawase, Kwabrafoso, Boete, Brahabebome, Asonkore, Akaporiso, Pomposo, Kwabenakwa, among others. These settlements form an essential part of the district's social fabric and contribute to its overall growth and prosperity.
Administratively, the district is organized into three (3) Town Councils and further subdivided into 19 Electoral Areas. This subdivision facilitates District Assembly elections and ensures effective governance and representation at the local level. Additionally, the district falls under one (1) Parliamentary Constituency, strengthening its political integration within the broader national framework.
Population
According to data from the 2010 Population and Housing Census conducted by the Ghana Statistical Service, the district was home to a population of 56,882, with an annual growth rate of 2.7%. As of 2020, the population has been estimated to have increased to 74,247, indicating a significant growth in just a decade. This demographic expansion reflects the district's appeal as a place of residence and signifies potential opportunities for development.
