Subsequently, in September 2017, the Obuasi East District was created as a separate entity from the main Municipal Assembly.
Located in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, the Obuasi Municipality is situated between latitudes 5o35'N and 5o65'N, and longitudes 6o35'W and 6o90'W. Encompassing a total land area of 162.4 square kilometers, it is in close proximity to the Regional Capital of the Ashanti Region and lies 64 kilometers from Obuasi ETS to Kumasi Post Office.
The Obuasi Municipality shares borders with several other districts. To the South lies Akrofoum District (Akrofuoum), to the East is Obuasi East District (Tutuka), to the West is Amansie Central (Jakubu), and to the North is Adansi North District (Fomena).
Within the municipality, there are 32 communities, comprising of Nineteen (19) Electoral Areas and two (2) Zonal Councils, namely:
Obuasi Central Zonal Council
Kunka Zonal Council.
