The iconic Black Star Square

Stories and facts

Following the Gold Coast's independence from the British in 1957, Kwame Nkrumah was elected as both the country's first prime minister and president. To commemorate the country's independence, Kwame Nkrumah ordered the square's construction. Queen Elizabeth II was in town at the time.

It was finished in 1961, the same year that Queen Elizabeth II paid an official visit to Ghana. The Black Star Square is located halfway between Accra's southern coastline and 28 February Road. Black Star Square was given its name when construction was completed.

Ghana's Independence Day parade, which takes place on March 6 every year, is held in Black Star Square. The Golden Jubilee parade, which commemorated Ghana's 50th anniversary of achieving independence from British colonial authority, was particularly noteworthy.

The Golden Jubilee ceremony took place on March 6, 2007, and President John Kufour served as its host. All significant national public events and national festivals are also held there. Everyone who visits is welcome to snap images of the Black Star Gate and other structures.

There are 30,000-seater stands at the Black Star Square. Three statues that represent the struggle for freedom and independence may be seen in the square.

This contains the Liberation Day Monument, the Black Star Gate, sometimes known as the Black Star Monument and the Independence Arch. The Ghanaians who gave their lives in the struggle for Ghana's independence are memorialized with a monument of a soldier facing the Independence Arch.
