The Tengzug Shrine, renowned in the region, was once a refuge for escaped slaves. Nowadays, it serves as a place for traditional religious ceremonies involving animal sacrifices, aimed at securing good fortune and appeasing the Talensi ancestors. Visitors can climb the rocks leading to the Tengzug Shrine with the guidance of a local, and upon arrival, they remove their tops to witness the sacrifice of birds and chickens.
Inside the shrine, amidst the remnants of recent sacrifices, visitors are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the region and the enchanting world of the Tongo Hills. The dry landscape is characterized by massive Baobab trees and imposing boulders, attracting both tourists and religious pilgrims. Although occupying only twenty square kilometres, the Tongo Hills are replete with historical significance, religious importance, and opportunities for fantastic hiking.
Apart from the shrines nestled within the rock formations, the local community has reconstructed several traditional Talensi homes in the area. These homes have a cylindrical shape and are clustered in neighbourhoods. Their miniature doorways are followed by a short interior wall, providing protection against intruders. Aside from the entrance and a few openings for smoke, the homes remain sealed off from the outside world.
The Tongo Hills offer visitors a glimpse into the world of the Talensi people, and those who visit at the right time can immerse themselves in one of the region's lively festivals. The Golob Festival takes place in March, centring around the sowing of fields. In October and November, the Bo'araam Festival captivates attendees with traditional beer drinking and the sacrifice of donkeys, goats, and fowl.
