WA East District - Funsi

Stories and facts

Established in July 2004 through L.I 1746, the Wa East District emerged as an independent district, separating from the Wa Municipality. This district is geographically situated in the southeastern sector of the Upper West region. Its administrative center is Funsi, positioned approximately 115 kilometers distant from Wa, the regional capital.

Encompassing a land expanse of around 4,240 square kilometres, its geographical coordinates range between latitudes 9º 55”N and 10º 25”N, and longitudes 1º 10”W and 2º 5”W. Due to its relatively isolated location in relation to other districts within the region, the Wa East District has encountered challenges in accessing fundamental social and economic infrastructure and services.

The district shares its borders with several adjacent regions: the Mamprugo-Moaduri District to the northeast, the North Gonja District to the southeast, and the Sissala East Municipal and Sissala West District to the north. Additionally, the district shares a boundary with the Wa Municipal district to the west.

As of the 2021 population and housing census, the district's populace totals 91,457 individuals, comprising 46,621 males and 44,836 females.
