Historical Background
The Yendi Municipal Assembly was formally established in 1988 by the enactment of PNDC Law 207, Act 462, and LI 1443. Subsequently, it gained Municipality status in 2007 through Act 462 and LI 2070, a significant milestone in its administrative growth. The pivotal role it plays in the region's governance is evident through its status as the capital of the esteemed Dagbon Kingdom, an ancient and culturally rich institution.
Geographical Location
Situated in the Eastern corridor of the Northern Region of Ghana, the Yendi Municipality spans Latitude 90–350 North and Longitude 00–300 West and 00–150 East. Notably, the Greenwich Meridian passes through several settlements within its borders, such as Yendi, Bago, Laatam, Lumpua, Gbetobu, Gbungbaliga, and Nakpachei. Surrounding the Municipality are six other District Assemblies, namely Saboba, Chereponi, and Zabzugu Districts to the East, Nanumba North Municipal to the South, Gushegu Municipal to the North, and Mion District to the West.
Strategic Importance
The Yendi Municipality's central location within the Eastern Corridor of the Northern Region makes it strategically significant. Encompassing a vast landmass of 1,446.3 sq km, according to the Ghana Statistical Service's 2010 Population and Housing Census, it serves as a vital hub for regional activities. The Municipality's proximity to the Northern Regional capital, Tamale, approximately 90 km away, enhances its accessibility and fosters connectivity within the region.
The Yendi Municipality stands as a historic administrative center, having evolved from its establishment in 1988 to becoming a crucial Municipality in 2007 and further expansion in 2012. Serving as the capital of the renowned Dagbon Kingdom adds to its cultural and political significance. Geographically, it occupies a strategic position in the Eastern corridor of the Northern Region, facilitating regional development and connectivity. As one of the oldest and most important Administrative MMDAs in Northern Ghana, the Yendi Municipality continues to play a key role in shaping the region's progress and identity.
