It lies in the eastern corridor of the Northern Region and shares borders with Zabzugu District and the Republic of Togo to the east, East Gonja to the west, Nkwanta District of the Oti Region to the south-east, Nanumba North Municipal to the North, and Kpandai District to the south-west. Covering a land mass of 1,789.2 square kilometers, the district is known for its rich cultural heritage and a population of 93,464 as of 2010.

The district's population is nearly evenly split between males and females, with 46,776 and 46,688 respectively. A majority of the population, approximately 82.1 percent, resides in rural areas, while the remaining 17.9 percent live in urban areas, making Nanumba South District predominantly rural.
Age and Sex Structure
Within the age structure of the district, the 0-4 age group constitutes the highest proportion, accounting for 18.6 percent. As age increases, the proportions decrease consistently, with the exception of the 60-64, 70-74, and 80-84 age groups, which show higher populations than the 65-69 age group. Individuals aged 0-14 years make up 47.4 percent of the district's population, while the 15-64 age groups constitute 48.7 percent, and those aged 65 and older represent 3.9 percent. Across all age groups, the rural areas have higher population numbers than the urban areas.
